Calling all bloggers! Take your grandparents for tea and cakes on Valentines on us!
Do you have your own blog? If so, then we'd like to treat you and your grandparents to a special treat on Valentines!
Why? To raise awareness of one thing...
Raising awareness with #ShareTheLove
At Fairfield Care, we work with a lot of care homes, looking after the nation's grandparents and great grandparents and want to raise awareness of a huge issue we see every day.
Loneliness in the elderly is extremely common, and not just in the care homes we work with. Being placed into care can cause one to feel exceptionally isolated since they may not be able to see friends and family unless they come to visit, but the same goes if the individual is living at home on their own.
Since our grandparents are retired (or most anyway!), if they don't have something - or someone - with which to fill their new-found time, the vast expanse of hours in the day can get very lonesome. Lack of mobility often means they cannot leave their place of residence to see other people, and if their spouse passes or they have no pets to keep them company, it is easy to see why a sense of isolation and loneliness can set in.
You might be surprised to learn that 51% of all people aged 75 and over live on their own (ONS, 2010), while 17% of older people have contact with family, friends and neighbours less than once a week, and 11% have contact less than once a month (facts collated by Campaign To End Loneliness).
A shocking 59% of adults aged 52 or over who report poor health say they feel lonely some of the time or often (Beaumont, 2013) - and depression now affects around a quarter of our grandparents.
It's clear some action needs to be taken. That's why we need your help.
Whilst we all live busy lives, it's important to remember what a visit to our grandparents can mean. That's why we've started this campaign that we want to revolve around Valentine's Day: here's why.
We think that the day shouldn't just be for celebrating the love we share with our partners, but also with all the other people we love the most, especially our grandparents.
Since our grandpaps and grandmama's are in need of our love and care, now more than ever, we want you to #ShareTheLove.
